During this period William Parker completed a series of studies and paintings based on Rembrandt’s portraits of his wife Saskia van Uylenburgh and his mistress Hendrickje Stofells as the goddess of nature, Flora—personifications of Parker’s earlier landscape theme. Many of the paintings are grand scale, evincing an almost-photographic portraiture set against the animated brushwork of the costumes and headdresses.
